Edmundas Lapenas (born 1984) is a Lithuanian pianist currently living in Oslo, Norway. As a musician, Lapenas is greatly inspired by his mentor Valentina Berman.
Lapenas was born in Kretinga, Lithuania, where he began to play the piano at the age of 5. His father, also a musician, encouraged both his children to play the piano. At the age of 8, Lapenas attended his first International Balys Dvarionas competition in Lithuania, where he received the highest award, Laureate (1992). After the competition he performed at the concert hall of the Vilnius Philharmonic.
Lapenas also competed in several countries, and at the age of 10, he won second place in Berlingske Tidende International Pianists Competition in Copenhagen, Denmark. At this time, Lapenas studied at Klaipėda E. Balsys Art School with V. Potjenko. He has received Laureates and diplomas in many competitions since the age of 9, and in 2000 won the National Z. Fibich Competition in Vilnius, Lithuania. He has also participated several times in the festival Skambanti banga in Klaipėda, Lithuania.
At the age of 13, he participated in Young Pianists Festival Kaunas 97, and from this festival he was selected to perform his Schubert Impromptu No. 2 in E-flat major at the main stage of the Vilnius Philharmonics for a live national television broadcast. The following year, Lapenas performed Mendelssohn Capriccio brilliant Op. 22 with Minor Lithuania Symphony Orchestra. At the age of 16, Lapenas moved to study with Professor Liucija Drasutienė at Vilnius M.K. Čiurlionis National Art School. With L. Drasutienė, Lapenas learned the discipline and technical skills needed to continue his development as a pianist. In 2004, he studied at Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre in Vilnius. The following year, he moved to Oslo, Norway, to study with Professor Jiří Hlinka at Barratt-Due Music Institute. In 2009, he completed his studies as a solo pianist.
In 2005, Lapenas performed Grieg piano concerto with Kaunas Philharmonic, conducted by Pavel Berman. And in 2009, he performed Halvdan Cleve second piano concerto with Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra, and the distinguished conductor Gintaras Rinkevičius.
From the age of 15, Lapenas attended master classes with Lazar and Valentina Berman in Klaipėda, Lithuania. And from the age of 21, he has traveled regularly to Florence, Italy, to work with Valentina Berman. Lapenas has performed in Norway, Lithuania, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Belgium, England, and Spain.
